Roadtrip Pricer

How road trip fuel cost is estimated

This calculator estimates how much fuel a drive will cost from three numbers: the distance, your vehicle's fuel economy, and the price of fuel. It multiplies the distance by your fuel economy to estimate total fuel used, then multiplies that by the price per liter or gallon to get an estimated total cost. Distance, fuel economy, and price each have their own independent unit dropdown — kilometers or miles, MPG/L per 100km/km per liter, and liter or gallon pricing — so you can mix metric and imperial inputs however your trip's numbers actually come to you, and the currency label is just that: a label on the result, not a currency conversion.

How to use it

Enter the distance you're driving, your vehicle's fuel efficiency in whichever unit you know it in, and the price you're paying per liter or gallon. The estimated trip cost updates instantly, along with how much fuel that trip is expected to use.

Example fuel-cost calculation

A 500 km trip at 8 L/100km and $1.60 per liter works out to about 40 liters of fuel and roughly $64 in estimated fuel cost — switch the distance to miles or the efficiency to MPG at any point and the numbers you've already entered convert automatically rather than resetting.

MPG vs. L/100km

MPG (miles per gallon) and L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) measure fuel efficiency in opposite directions — MPG is distance per unit of fuel, so a higher number means better efficiency, while L/100km is fuel per unit of distance, so a lower number means better efficiency. Switch between them (plus km/L) using the unit dropdown; the calculator converts whichever figure you enter, so you can mix a metric distance with an MPG rating, for example, without converting it yourself first.

What affects the real cost

This is an estimate based on the fuel economy figure you enter, not a live routing engine. Actual fuel consumption varies with traffic, driving speed, weather, terrain, cargo weight, and how the vehicle is driven — the same trip can cost noticeably more in stop-and-go city traffic than on a steady highway run. The estimate also covers fuel only; it doesn't include tolls, parking, or other trip costs.

Common use cases

  • Budgeting fuel cost for a road trip before you leave
  • Comparing the fuel cost of two different routes or vehicles
  • Splitting gas costs fairly between passengers on a shared drive
  • Sanity-checking a fuel budget in a different unit system than you're used to

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate gas cost for a trip?

Enter the distance, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the price per liter or gallon — the estimated cost and fuel used update instantly.

Does the calculator support metric units?

Yes — distance can be entered in kilometers or miles, and fuel efficiency in MPG, L/100km, or km/L, so metric and imperial inputs both work.

Is the result exact?

No — it's an estimate based on the fuel efficiency you enter. Real-world fuel use varies with traffic, speed, terrain, and driving style.

Does it include tolls?

No — only estimated fuel cost is calculated. Tolls, parking, and other trip costs aren't included.
